Newlyn Technologies Ltd. was named after the small town close to Penzance in Cornwall, England, which has symbolized for centuries, the close tie between England and her surrounding seas. Newlyn has been an important fishing port in the past and still has a large fleet based out of its harbour although it now is an important tourism center in Cornwall.
For many years it has been the home of the fundamental positioning datum for the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain, the so-called Ordnance Datum and is used as the reference station for all UK geodetic survey data. Even in this high technology world where position can be measured to fractions of centimetres using satellite-ranging systems such as GPS and Glonass, the datum points in Newlyn still represent an important fundamental reference standard for many locations.
The reference station has also been used for the standard tidal systems around the world and thus provides land-dwellers and seafarers alike with a positioning reference, which is truly global in nature, consistent, accurate and timely.
